A year later, some suburban store names were changed to Market Basket, evoking a prior SoCal chain with the same name, that had only departed a few years earlier. Just 18 days later, American Breco merged into the Yucaipa Company (sound familiar?). Brothers Albert and Hugh Gerrard opened their first market in Pomona in 1900, soon expanding to Orange County and renaming the chain Triangle Grocery. Sometime in the mid-1910s, they came up with an innovative self-service approach, stocking their markets alphabetically by product. Hence, the name Alpha Beta, which arrived in either 1917 or 1919 (accounts differ). By 1932, the brothers had opened their first two supermarkets, and the chain grew and grew from there.
The beginnings of the valley chain aren't certain due to conflicting accounts, but founder Joseph Dale opened a store — in either 1929 or 1930 — in Glendale or on Pasadena Avenue in Los Angeles. The Sun Valley-based, family-run chain grew to 11 stores before selling out to Northern California-based Lucky Stores Inc. in 1984. The company continued to operate 10 Dale's Junior Market convenience stores, also mainly in the San Fernando Valley.
Crawford's continued at a much smaller scale, with stores operating into the early 1990s. Hen House — part of Balls Food Stores — has 11 locations in the Kansas City metro. The company prides itself on high-quality, on-trend retail foodservice, but its new crown jewel stands as an illustration of the industry as a whole — bigger, modern, expansive and ready to lead supermarkets into the future.

Chefs chop and prepare produce, fire up ovens and grills, and load trays of food onto the retail floor. Just a few feet away, through the large, open windows that allow consumer views of the kitchen, employees make fresh to-order waffles.
An almost jovial atmosphere is apparent, in stark contrast to many Monday morning workplaces. Frost says the culture is built on talented employees who enjoy working for the store. The result is a unique partnership with Hissho, a supplier of freshly prepared sushi and more. While Hissho’s sushi and rolls are available, what makes its Hen House location different is the addition of pho and bahn mi sandwiches. The meat manager of a nearby Hen House location once worked for a Mongolian BBQ chain, and Frost says the company wisely utilized his experience during the remodel.
